To celebrate the year of the rabbit, I knew I wanted to expand on the paper animation I did a few years ago. I was short on time, so considered doing something fairly simple. I’ve recently been learning cell animation in Photoshop and thought it would be a great way to plan out the shapes I would need. I worked at a lower frame rate than usual so I wouldn’t need to cut out as many rabbits. I tried to include some squash and stretch as well as a little overlapping action with the ears.

I used the 2D cell animation as a guide in Dragonframe while shooting the stop motion of the paper rabbits. This made the actual shooting period very quick in comparison to other projects I’ve created.

On reflection I would have liked to have made it more obvious that this was a paper animation, by using paper with more texture and having some of the background elements raised to introduce more shadow.
